Pope Leo XIV spent Thursday handling documents at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, the Vatican said, while doctors awaited tissue analyses that could guide decisions on further treatment for his lung cancer.
Leo also joined priests for another Mass in a chapel near his room on the hospital’s 10th floor, the Vatican said. Dr. Luigi Carbone, Leo’s personal doctor, and Dr. Stefano Margaritora, Gemelli’s head of thoracic surgery, said his post-operative tests were within normal levels. They said imaging showed the operated lung was healing well.
The Vatican said Leo completed full mobility exercises in physiotherapy and managed his daily activities without assistance.
The Holy See Press Office said the Oct. 13 operation removed the lower right lobe of Leo’s lung and identified adenocarcinoma, which is more common than other lung cancer types. EconoTimes’ earlier account of his first post-surgery update covered his initial recovery.
Doctors are awaiting tissue analyses to establish the cancer’s molecular profile, check whether it spread beyond the removed lobe and assess whether additional treatment is needed.
