Pope Leo XIV will miss an Oct. 27 peace gathering in Assisi after medical advice led him to avoid helicopter travel while recovering from lung surgery.
The Vatican said Friday that the advice was intended to support his recovery after thoracic surgery. Leo was due to join other religious leaders at the event in the Italian town, about 175 kilometers north of Rome.
After a chest examination, his surgeon and personal doctor said his recovery was progressing very well. Leo, 71, underwent surgery on Oct. 13 after being diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. The operation removed the lower lobe of his right lung. Test results announced Oct. 21 showed the cancer was localized; doctors said he would not need further ongoing cancer treatment.
Leo left the hospital on Oct. 17 and has gradually resumed regular duties. He held his weekly audience with pilgrims in St Peter’s Square on Oct. 21, during his return to Vatican duties.
The Vatican has not confirmed whether he can keep his Nov. 6-17 itinerary to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
