The Vatican announced Pope Leo XIV would return to the Vatican on Saturday, four days after lung surgery, while his personal physician and surgeon separately said he was ready to leave the hospital.
The doctors reviewed blood-test results, a chest X-ray taken Saturday morning and Leo’s overall condition. A separate medical update said Leo could manage normal daily activities on his own.
The Holy See Press Office said tissue findings from the Oct. 13 procedure identified adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. EconoTimes’ earlier report on Leo’s first recovery update detailed the operation and diagnosis. Doctors had described the surgery as successful and without complications.
Earlier this week, Leo handled documents and attended Mass with priests at the hospital. Doctors also reported that his post-operative tests were within normal levels, as EconoTimes reported in its account of his hospital work.
The Vatican said Leo is due to give Sunday’s customary midday blessing from a window facing St. Peter’s Square. The Independent reported it would be his first public appearance since surgery.
