Insomniac Games just made “Ratchet & Clank” fans’ wishes come true after announcing that the game is getting a significant framerate boost that will benefit PlayStation 5 owners. Meanwhile, PS4 players still have time to download the game for free and keep it in their library forever.
‘Ratchet & Clank’ gets a 60fps boost, but there’s a catch
The developer announced that the 2016 platformer is getting a framerate boost that will allow “Ratchet & Clank” to run at 60fps on PS5. The new option will be available through a new update going live in April, which is an interesting timing since the game will turn five years old on April 12.

In its current form, “Ratchet & Clank” can run on 4K even with the PS4 Pro console. However, Insomniac Games clarified that the 60fps boost is only achievable with the new-gen console. “No, it's not possible to run the game at 60fps on PS4, needs the PS5's horsepower,” the developer told a fan.
It is unclear if this is the last PS5-focused update Insomniac Games will release for “Ratchet & Clank.” Aside from high-end gaming resolution and framerate, the new-gen console also supports 3D spatial sound while the new DualSense controller has haptic feedback. It is then not surprising if fans are wondering if these updates are also in the pipeline for the platformer.
However, when a fan asked for a DualSense-related update, Insomniac Games directed their attention to the upcoming “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” launching exclusively on PS5 on June 11. The upcoming title is an all-new game that will once again feature the titular characters along with the familiar antagonist Dr. Nefarious. Fans can expect the game to run on up to 4K natively with graphics settings for 30fps and 60fps.
How to download ‘Ratchet & Clank’ for free
The “Ratchet & Clank” 60fps boost arrives at the perfect time, especially as the game is currently available to download for free on PS4. The platformer was the highlight of Sony’s Play at Home this month and is currently featured as a free game for March. This means fans can still get the game and keep it forever until Wednesday, March 31, at 8 p.m. PDT.
As part of the Play at Home promo, fans will not need other subscriptions to get the game. Meanwhile, PS5 owners with active PS Plus memberships can get unlimited access to “Ratchet & Clank” and 19 more titles for free as part of the PS Plus Collection at no additional cost.
