RTX said Raytheon, its business unit, was selected for a U.S. Space Force program to update radars that detect missile launches and track objects in space. The company describes the installations as the outermost layer of the U.S. missile-defense architecture.

RTX announced the selection Oct. 15, naming the effort the Ground-Based Radar Digitization program. The company said the project is intended to improve reliability and radar performance as the systems take on more demanding operations.

The program is set to start with prototypes, then move to faster deployment at the sites still awaiting upgrades, RTX said. Raytheon will develop a common design alongside Space Force teams and industry partners; RTX says the approach should streamline upkeep, reduce reliance on any single supplier and ease later upgrades.
