Eight days after a building under construction collapsed in Nairobi, officials said 16 people remained missing; Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba confirmed that rescuers had recovered a woman's body Friday.
Crews had removed about 85% of the debris by then, officials said. The figure describes debris cleared, not the share of the search completed.
Osumba said the Kenya Red Cross and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations jointly reviewed missing-person cases and confirmed the count. He said the body was taken to Nairobi City Mortuary.
National Disaster Management Unit Director Duncan Ochieng said teams were concentrating on parts of the wreckage where they had indications of possible survivors.
The building collapsed Oct. 23 in Eastleigh, a Nairobi district. The Nairobi County governor's office said the ground floor was occupied and people might be trapped, according to earlier coverage of the search. Anadolu Agency reported that Nairobi's rapid growth had put added pressure on construction oversight.
