‘Riverdale’ season 1’s episode 10, titled “Chapter Ten: The Lost Weekend,” will feature Jughead as he gets a surprise birthday party from his friends. However, things will quickly go haywire. Meanwhile, 1980s teen icon Molly Ringwald is set to make her first appearance on the series as Archie’s mother, Mary.
The synopsis for “Chapter Ten: The Lost Weekend” posted on TV Muse reads, “When Fred (Luke Perry) decides to finalize the divorce with Archie's (KJ Apa) mother Mary (guest star Molly Ringwald), Archie hides his true feelings. Archie tries to win Valerie (guest star Hayley Law) back with a romantic evening, however, Betty (Lili Reinhart) hijacks his plans when she decides to throw Jughead (Cole Sprouse) a surprise birthday party.
Once Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) learns of the party, she decides to make it interesting and things quickly get out of control. Meanwhile, Veronica (Camila Mendes) contemplates whether she should participate in the deposition to help get her Dad released.”
The upcoming episode will follow Betty and the rest of the gang as they prepare a surprise birthday party for their friend, Jughead. However, things will not go as planned all thanks to Cheryl and her meddling.
The promo for episode 10 opens to Archie telling Jughead, “You’re getting a birthday party whether you want it or not.” Jughead looks away exasperated, clearly not amused at the idea of putting focus on himself following the problems ushered in by recent events.
In the next scene, the gang is seen having the time of their lives at the party. Jughead is also seen looking apprehensive as he receives his birthday cake. Things finally spin out of control when Jughead punches someone straight in the head.
Archie and Valerie also get into a fight when she flings her drink at him. In another scene, someone is seen locking the door. Veronica looks up and says to herself, “And the plot thickens.”
In the final scene, Molly Ringwald makes her first appearance on the series as Archie’s mother, Mary Andrews. Archie looks clearly happy and surprised to see her.
Ringwald is best known for her work on numerous cult films from the 1980s including the successful John Hughes coming-of-age films such as ‘The Breakfast Club,’ ‘Sixteen Candles,’ and ‘Pretty in Pink.’
According to International Business Times, the incoming episode is set to put more focus on Archie and his feelings towards his parents as well as their imminent divorce. Mary’s purpose of returning to town was to finalize divorce papers from Fred. It is unclear whether she will find out about Fred’s developing romance with Veronica’s mother, Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), despite efforts to keep the affair a secret.
Mendes, who plays Veronica on the series, recently revealed that the episode will tie everything together. According to CBR, the actress said, “Episode 10 is a really fun episode and what I love most about it is that it kind of favors the whole group. Everything ties in.”
She continued, “Sometimes you see that the episodes, everyone has their own storyline — like Veronica is over there dealing with her mom and Betty is with Polly — and everyone doesn’t really connect in some episodes and I feel like, in this one, everyone is involved in the same story and it’s really a story of friendship and togetherness.”
‘Riverdale’ season 1’s episode 10, titled “Chapter Ten: The Lost Weekend,” is scheduled to air on The CW on April 13, 2017. It was directed by Dawn Wilkinson and written by Britta Lundin and Brian E. Paterson. It will be followed by episode 11, titled "Chapter Eleven: To Riverdale and Back Again," directed by Kevin Sullivan and scheduled to be released on April 27.
