Measures of new content creation on Roblox, including assets produced, tripled over the past month as artificial intelligence expanded game development, the company's chief executive said in an interview.
Games created primarily with AI reached the platform's top 20 for the first time. The company is also pursuing adult players, who spend more for each engagement than younger users.
Speaking on Bloomberg Technology, published Oct. 30, the executive described a quarter that exceeded the upper end of the company's forecast. He called it a "$1.7 billion quarter" without specifying what that figure measured.
Users aged 18 and older grew 18% from a year earlier, while growth in India reached 37%. He linked the expansion of content to the company's business, saying: "Our business is built on great content."
The company wants Roblox to account for 10% of the global gaming market. Its share of the U.S. gaming market for people younger than 18 is about 20%.
Adult users spend about 15% more for each engagement, making them a more lucrative audience. The market for players aged 18 and older is about four times the size of the younger market.
The executive cited Steal an Egg among games reaching the top 20 that were mostly created with AI. He also announced a Jonas Brothers appearance in the game on Halloween, Oct. 31, at 8 a.m., or 11 a.m. Eastern time.
He rejected the claim that Steal an Egg accounted for half the platform's users playing at the same time. "That is not correct," he said. "It is not half of the concurrent users."
Popular games regularly rise and fall on Roblox, and some attract large numbers of simultaneous players. About 40% of its weekly top 100 games were created within the previous three months.
The executive linked that turnover to changes in how Roblox helps users find games. Its system promotes games that keep players coming back, helping newer experiences reach an audience.
Roblox operates most of its computing infrastructure itself and also uses cloud providers. During Saturday peaks, it combines its own capacity with those partners' services to support increased activity.
Creators receive that automatic expansion of computing capacity through the platform, allowing them to concentrate on content. The remarks did not establish how tougher child-safety measures affected user behaviour, despite a question on that issue.
