Ronna McDaniel, a former Republican National Committee chair, said she expects Democrats to take the House while Republicans may retain the Senate, offering a split forecast ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms.

McDaniel gave her assessment in a Tuesday interview with CBS News, one week before Election Day. She said Democrats need three seats to take the House and predicted they would probably win control of the chamber. McDaniel chaired the Republican National Committee from 2017 to 2024.

On the Senate, McDaniel described the map as difficult for Republicans and pointed to attention around Kansas. She also questioned how often President Donald Trump had traveled to Texas, tying the state’s contest to her concerns about the party’s strategy.

“We shouldn’t be spending $200 million or $300 million in Texas to defend a Senate candidate,” McDaniel said. AdImpact data showed more than $230 million in spending in Texas, placing the contest among history’s costliest nonpresidential races.

McDaniel said redistricting efforts earlier in Trump’s term made a 50-seat Democratic wave less likely. She added that Republicans could keep the Senate even as she expected Democrats to take the House.
