STMicroelectronics is sampling three microcontroller lines built on a shared STM32 platform, aiming to let developers reuse design work across vehicles, industrial equipment and robots.

The STM32A4 is built for local control and safety functions inside vehicles. STM32A5 is pitched for automotive uses as well as industrial automation, robotics and energy systems. STM32A9 is intended for safety-critical control across several functions, placing it at the broader end of the lineup.

The shared design uses Arm Cortex-M processor cores, ST's STM32Cube software development tools and common manufacturing technologies. ST says this lets engineers carry software and other design work across products instead of rebuilding it for every application. The company says that reuse can span markets whose products still face different qualification requirements, including safety expectations and product lifetimes.

Memory capacity also varies by line. ST lists maximum memory of 0.5 megabytes for the A4, 4 megabytes for the A5 and 12 megabytes for the A9. Its product page lists ASIL-B safety for STM32A5 and ASIL-D safety for STM32A9.

ST says the common platform reflects a growing overlap in requirements across vehicles, industrial equipment and robots. It cites demand for control, connectivity, security and AI capabilities across those fields, while noting that products still must meet different qualification and product-life needs. Reusing development work is the benefit ST presents to customers, although it has not put a time or cost estimate on the potential savings.

“Embedded innovation should not require developers to start again with every new product,” said Remi El-Ouazzane, president of STMicroelectronics’ Microcontrollers, Digital ICs and RF Products Group, in the announcement.

ST outlined plans for an automotive STM32A series in 2024. Its Nov. 4 announcement says all three lines are sampling to customers, with broader availability expected to begin with STM32A9 in the first half of 2027. The company did not provide firm broader-availability timing for STM32A4 or STM32A5.
