The sixth-union proposal is expected to center on employees in Samsung’s device experience division, but the second-largest union denies that internal leadership disputes prompted it, Yonhap reported Thursday.
The company’s largest union said an application to establish the group was filed Wednesday with South Korea’s labor ministry. It also said current and former leaders of the second-largest union were pursuing the proposal, Yonhap reported.
Yonhap reported that an unnamed labor official said a rift between the second-largest union’s former and current leadership had deepened and may have contributed to the effort to form a separate group. The second-largest union rejected that explanation, saying its internal disagreements did not prompt the planned launch.
Yonhap described the largest union’s membership as drawn mainly from semiconductor workers, while the second-largest represents employees in the device experience division. That division oversees Samsung’s consumer electronics and mobile device businesses. The proposed union’s organizational structure and scope of activities remain unconfirmed.
