Sen. Bernie Sanders sees a possible opening to advance wage and health care goals with President Donald Trump as Stephen Miller takes the White House chief of staff role, The Independent reported Sunday.
Sanders made the remarks in an NBC News interview with Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.” His platform includes a $20-per-hour minimum wage and health coverage for all, according to the report. Sanders suggested Trump might respond to the number of workers who earn too little to live on.
Sanders called Trump “not stupid — and he’s a good politician,” The Independent reported. He also argued that Trump might find political value in guaranteeing health care coverage. Sanders said Miller’s appointment did not concern him and described trying to work with Trump as worthwhile, although success was uncertain.
Trump selected Miller, previously a deputy to outgoing chief of staff Susie Wiles, after the Republican Party’s midterm defeat, the outlet reported. Miller has been associated with the administration’s restrictive immigration agenda, according to The Independent.
In a separate Fox News interview, Trump left open cooperation with Democrats on immigration, the outlet reported. He also said he could veto legislation he opposed.
The Independent reported that Democrats are expected to take control of both chambers in January. EconoTimes previously outlined the Senate seat gains Democrats needed for a majority.
