The Saudi-led coalition said a ballistic missile headed toward Riyadh was intercepted and destroyed on Oct. 20, as the capital faced another security warning amid renewed fighting with Yemen’s Houthis.
Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki, spokesman for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, said the Houthis launched the missile. The Saudi Press Agency carried his statement, which did not identify the force that intercepted it.
Saudi Civil Defense warned of a potential danger in Riyadh through the National Early Warning Platform. It later lifted the alert and told residents to heed its guidance and refrain from gathering or recording footage.
Anadolu Agency reported explosions in Riyadh after the warning. The Associated Press separately reported hearing an explosion in northern Riyadh.
The alert followed separate danger warnings in Riyadh and Al-Kharj that Civil Defense lifted the previous day. The Saudi-led coalition entered Yemen’s war in 2015 in support of the country’s internationally recognized government, after the Houthis seized Sanaa and other territory.
