HOOVER, Ala., April 27, 2017 -- A conference in Alabama will help executive-level leaders in law enforcement and education learn how to properly design school safety initiatives, including school resource officer programs. The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) will host its first-ever 2017 National Leadership Summit, “School-Based Policing and School Safety in the 21st Century,” May 8-9, in Hoover.
“We’ve targeted this educational event toward top-level leaders such as police chiefs, sheriffs, school system superintendents and principals, as well as executives in the juvenile justice system,” said Mo Canady, NASRO’s executive director. “Those who attend will learn keys to successful school resource officer and other programs that will not only improve the safety of students but will also help protect their organizations from legal liability.”
More than 150 people from 12 states have registered for the conference, which will take place at the Hyatt Regency - Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. Scheduled speakers and presentations include:
- “Foundations of a Successful School-Based Policing Program and School Safety in the Twenty-First Century”: Canady.
- “Leadership Response Before and During a Critical Incident”: Dr. Kimberly Miller, Kimberly A. Miller & Associates.
- “Reunification: Lessons Learned as a Survivor of the Virginia Tech Tragedy”: Kristina Anderson, Virginia Tech survivor and founder of the Koshka Foundation for Safe Schools.
- “Recovery: Leadership Lessons from Columbine and Beyond”: Frank DeAngelis, former principal of Columbine High School.
- “School Safety Legal Update and Legislative Reform: Government Liability and the Failure to Train”: Bernie James, law professor, Pepperdine University.
