The U.K. said a U.N. Security Council resolution adopted Oct. 30 renewed the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for 12 months, sustaining a U.N. role in a political process that includes elections.

At a Security Council meeting Oct. 30, Sarah MacIntosh, the U.K.’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said the mandate allows SRSG Tetteh to keep pursuing her political plan.

MacIntosh said Resolution 2835 urges Libyan parties to fulfill commitments under the “Smaller Convening” agreement. She said the agreement is intended to move Libya closer to elections that are free and fair, as well as transparent and inclusive, within 24 months.

The resolution also supports efforts to bring Libya’s judicial, military and security institutions back together, MacIntosh said. She said it gives UNSMIL a basis to help the parties establish one executive leadership and cautions Libyan actors against obstructing that process.

MacIntosh said the resolution highlights the mission’s human rights and rule-of-law efforts. It also encourages the mission to help ensure women can participate in politics with full and equal standing, in ways that are meaningful and safe.

She reaffirmed the U.K.’s support for UNSMIL and urged all parties to follow through on their pledges. MacIntosh said Libyans should have democratic choice, economic opportunity and security.
