It is safe to say that Fiona (Emmy Rossum) has hit rock bottom in the show’s mid-season finale last year. And when “Shameless” season 9 comes back this month, unfortunately, the new year will not be bringing a new sense of hope for the struggling Gallagher mother figure.
Viewers know by now that “Shameless” season 9 is going to be Rossum’s final stint for the Showtime series. Usually, TV characters are written with a sudden, life-changing arc to build up their reason for leaving the scene permanently.
However, this is not the case for Fiona. “Shameless” season 9 started and will continue this year with the eldest Gallagher still struggling to pick up the pace. The synopsis for the show’s 2019 premiere (or episode 8) confirms “Fiona’s downward spiral continues.”
Fans hoping Fiona catches a break will be disappointed as her problems will only get worse the following week in “Shameless” season 9 episode 9. Showtime says in the episode synopsis that Fiona’s anger management issues will get the best of her affecting her work at Patsy's Pies.
People might be wondering if Fiona’s woes could magically convince Frank (William H. Macy) to become a good father. Unfortunately, the teasers for the upcoming “Shameless” season 9 episodes indicate he will be preoccupied, thanks to Ingrid (Katey Sagal). While Fiona is drowning in her problems, Frank “searches for ways to finance Ingrid’s vision for their future together” in episode 9.
If there is someone who can possibly provide Fiona with some relief, it would be Debbie (Emma Kenney). The synopsis for “Shameless” season 9 episode 8 says Debbie will intervene and attempt at helping the Gallaghers go back to their normal routine.
Showtime has yet to confirm the “Shameless” season 9 episode where Fiona will leave. Whenever that is happening, expect Frank to be a “complete s***hole” the entire time, as Macy confirmed to Us Weekly. The show returns on Sunday, Jan. 20, at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
