UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said tackling extremism is fundamental to eradicating terrorism after a deadly shooting in Jordan.

In a post on X, Sheikh Abdullah wrote: “Fighting terrorism without combating extremism is like pouring fresh water into the sea and waiting for it to turn into a freshwater river.”

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the shooting at Hamoud Church in Jordan’s Karak Governorate. It said it opposed violent and extremist acts that put security and stability at risk.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said the Oct. 23 shooting took place during a funeral. It reported that seven people were killed and 34 injured.
