Fans have been waiting for “Sherlock” season 5 for a long time now. They want to see the Benedict Cumberbatch titular character detective drama again but there is no renewal announcement yet.
BBC Network has yet to declare if the fifth season of “Sherlock” is coming to make everything official. While everyone is waiting for the good news, below are some details to check out for some idea as to what can be expected in the next installment.
Debunking the cancellation rumors
The previous season of “Sherlock” was released in January 2017 and this means that there is still no follow-up even after more than three years. Because of this, there are fans who are convinced that the fifth season is not coming anymore.
Nobody can blame them since updates about “Sherlock” season 5 is also hard to come by. However, everyone should know that some of the major cast members and the drama’s showrunners have already refuted the speculations that the show was canceled already.
The series’ showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis said that they are sure “Sherlock” season 5 will still be coming back in the future.
"We did the last series a year ago, just about, and I've been flat-out on ‘Doctor Who’ ever since so I haven't really thought about it,” Express quoted Moffat as telling Chris Evans in an interview on BBC Radio 2 in 2017.
“Mark Gatiss has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.” Moffat went on to add that he sort of already assumed that they will return.
Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock Holmes also dismissed the rumors that they will not do “Sherlock” season 5 anymore. He was interviewed by the Associated Press and he clearly stated that they will keep doing the detective drama. However, he is not sure when filming could begin since the cast members and show execs are still busy with other works.
Cast
“Sherlock” season 5 will surely return with Cumberbatch but Martin Freeman who plays Dr. John Watson is unsure. This is because he released a statement before saying that he will only do this drama again if he finds it interesting.
In any case, Sian Brooke is expected to return as Eurus Holmes, Sherlock's sister. The actress also expressed her willingness to play her role again in “Sherlock” season 5.
"It would be great, she is definitely a character I would love to revisit,” she told Express. “You don’t get to play these parts every day, she’s abnormal and those sorts of parts are always great.”
Release date
As everyone knows, the filming for “Sherlock” season 5 has not started yet. The show is not even renewed as of the moment but if it will be announced before this year ends and filming will immediately follow, the predicted premiere is in the first half of 2023.
