PRINCETON JUNCTION, N.J., April 19, 2016 -- Healthcare spending losses to fraud and abuse total $272 billion a year, but no single part of the healthcare system is responsible. Each stage of healthcare has risks of fraud, errors, waste and abuse. These vulnerabilities can be reduced at every stage by implementing an identity management system based on smart card technology, the Smart Card Alliance outlines in a new infographic released today. The infographic, “Healthcare 2.0: A New Paradigm for a Secure and Streamlined Healthcare Industry,” depicts the impact of smart card technology on the future of healthcare identity authentication, and suggests how current challenges can be solved through interoperability, increased security, and multi-factor authentication.

“The healthcare industry is facing an identity management crisis. Until the industry can eliminate vulnerabilities at every stage, these problems will persist,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. “The vision outlined in this infographic shows how implementing a smart card technology-based identity management system can reduce these risks at every stage of care to reduce fraud, improve quality of care and streamline the workflow for healthcare entities.”
The infographic was developed by the Alliance’s Health and Human Services Council, and includes:
- An overview of the state of today’s healthcare market, and the existing impact of medical identity theft, fraud and abuse, and patient matching errors
- Solutions to make healthcare more secure at every stage, including strong authentication, secure payment, chain of trust and accountability
- Considerations for all stages of care, including pre-treatment, treatment, documentation, billing and post-treatment
Members from the Health and Human Services Council who participated in the development of the infographic, “Healthcare 2.0: A New Paradigm for a Secure and Streamlined Healthcare Industry,” included: ABnote, LifeMed ID and XTec, Incorporated.
