Snapchat Gets Payback On Facebook, Mocks It With April Fools’ Day Filter

Facebook has been stealing and copying ideas from Snapchat for some time now, with the latter being unable to do anything but sit back and watch. Thanks to the current scandals that Mark Zuckerberg’s social network is involved in, however, the youth-centric social media app finally got the chance to strike bike. For April Fools’ day, Snapchat released a filter that mocked Facebook on its recent blunders.

The filter basically mimic’s that of Facebook’s distinctive photo hosting features, including the caption that the user uploaded a picture, as well as the people who liked the photo. As Recode notes, however, the standard English caption is replaced by Cyrillic and the bottom details indicate that along with the user’s mother, a bot, and two others liked the photo.

As pranks go, this one by Snapchat aimed at Facebook is incredibly aggressive. It’s basically poking fun at the fact that the biggest social network in the world has become a vehicle for Russian election interference all over the world, with Zuckerberg and his team seemingly being unable to do anything about it.

Now, it’s worth pointing out that the consequences of Facebook’s effectiveness at spreading propaganda is no joke. It has been instrumental in changing the way people think and feel about certain issues, which the Cambridge Analytica debacle has shed some light on.

As Fortune also point out, the prank is intended to show Snapchat users that Facebook is for old people and for bots to fool those old people. As such, Snap Inc. is trying to reinforce its own brand while weakening that of Facebook.

With the wave of anger towards Facebook and the trending #deletefacebook movement gaining steam, this could be Snapchat’s chance to gain some momentum over its hated rival. If it’s able to capture enough attention, it might just finally get ahead of Instagram in terms of growth.
