Al Jazeera reported that some Haitians expressed support for El Salvador’s troop deployment against gangs. The gangs have nearly seized control of the Haitian capital.

Al Jazeera said Bukele promised a crackdown after four Salvadoran citizens were kidnapped.

EconoTimes’ earlier rescue coverage reported that the Salvadoran team was ambushed Oct. 18 and four technicians went missing. El Salvador’s representative to the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council said they were assigned to Task Force Libertad II, part of the international Gang Suppression Force (GSF). El Salvador previously said the deployment could reach 2,000 troops and grow further, according to EconoTimes’ coverage of the planned mission.

Gang violence has displaced nearly 1.5 million people in Haiti in recent years, the Associated Press reported. The United Nations said more than 5,700 people were killed or injured from January through mid-September 2026, and more than 230 were kidnapped during that period.
