Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) will seek another Dukovany contractor after talks ended without agreement, prompting South Korea’s industry ministry to establish an emergency management system.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said Monday it would launch the system and hold its first meeting that day. Officials were to consider follow-up steps to keep the Czech project moving and reduce the risk of similar setbacks.
The Korea Herald reported that KHNP ended negotiations last week with a South Korean construction group that included Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co. and Doosan Enerbility Co. The parties had not resolved key contract provisions, the newspaper reported. The group had been designated as the construction contractor.
KHNP said it would prepare a new tender to choose a contractor and aims to sign an agreement with a replacement consortium by July 2027. The company’s target is to allow construction to start in November 2027.
Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said he and the vice minister would check major project issues each week and respond as needed.
The Korea Herald reported the project’s estimated value is about 25 trillion won ($17.5 billion). It calls for two South Korean-designed APR1000 reactors, each rated at 1,000 megawatts. A consortium led by KHNP won the project in 2025, the newspaper reported.
