Democrat Suhas Subramanyam won another term representing Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, the Associated Press reported in a race call Tuesday, while the state’s vote count remained unofficial pending certification.
At 11:04 p.m. EST Tuesday, the Virginia Department of Elections’ tally showed Subramanyam with 200,615 votes and Republican Dave T. Beckwith with 119,456. Independent Ahsen Mujeeb Malik had 6,086 votes, and there were 636 write-in votes. Subramanyam’s lead over Beckwith was 81,159 votes.
The department labels the Nov. 3 returns unofficial. It says congressional results become official after certification by the State Board of Elections, leaving that state process as the next step.
Subramanyam took office Jan. 3, 2025, after winning the seat held by retiring Rep. Jennifer Wexton. According to his office, no Indian-American or South Asian had represented Virginia in Congress before him, and he was also the first such member from the East Coast.
ANI reported that Subramanyam said in an election-day interview, “I ran for office and I won. You can too.”
A Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and YouGov survey conducted before the election found Indian-American citizens favored Democratic House candidates by 43 percentage points. The survey measured preferences before voting, not the outcome of this race. EconoTimes previously reported on the survey’s findings on Indian-American voters.
