Samantha Wheeler (Katherine Heigl) is the latest addition to the cast of USA Network’s popular legal drama series. But now that the show is ending in “Suits” season 9, Samantha will face the all-new territory of working in the firm without her father figure, Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce).
Robert is the father of Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle). They did not have the closest relationship at first which is different in how Samantha was introduced. It was immediately established that Samantha looks up to Robert beyond just a mentor. But after Robert took the fall to save Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and the firm, he will not be returning for “Suits” season 9.
Even though Robert is gone, his absence will still have an effect on Samantha when it comes to continuously building her relationship with her colleagues in “Suits” season 9. “It’s very upsetting to lose someone in your life that close, and it’s going to throw [Samantha] off kilter a little bit. At the same time, there’s going to be some things happening at the firm that are gonna make her be protective of his name and his legacy because these people all know that he got run out of the bar for something Harvey and Donna did,” showrunner Aaron Korsh previously told Entertainment Weekly.

Losing Robert in the show might have also opened up many opportunities to further develop Samantha’s character, Korsh explained to Deadline. Meanwhile, before Robert left the show, fans may recall that he left Samantha cryptic advice. He told her to get closer to Harvey that might have given some fans the idea that something romantic will happen between Harvey and Samantha in “Suits” season 9. Added to that, there have been moments in season 8 between Harvey and Samantha that were sending the same message.
So fans might be wondering if Samantha becomes an obstacle for the “Darvey” happy ending in “Suits” season 9. Luckily, Korsh also confirmed that all signs of a Samantha-Harvey romance were all just red herrings. “That was put in there as a mislead to fans and possibly to Samantha,” he added. “We are not planning a romance between Harvey and Samantha.” “Suits” season 9 is confirmed to premiere in summer.
