With the popularity of coding education, more parents are seeking at home solutions to help their children achieve programming literacy. ThinkFun believes that board games can provide a fun and educational way to teach key programming concepts, both preparing students for a computer science education and helping them develop critical thinking and logical reasoning skills that can be applied to other subjects.
The //CODE series addresses key concepts including loops, conditionals, and Boolean Logic in an unplugged setting, making them an excellent resource in the classroom and at home. Games like ‘On the Brink,’ ‘Rover Control,’ and ‘Robot Repair’ are a key part of ThinkFun’s mission to provide affordable offline coding games that empower parents to take their children’s 21st-century education into their own hands.
The //CODE series was created by professional puzzle designer and educator Mark Engelberg. His career began as a pioneer in virtual reality, working for NASA on the Hubble Space Telescope repair mission. Engelberg now designs award-winning logic puzzles while also teaching math and computer science to students from kindergarten to college-aged levels.
Mark worked closely on this project with Bill Ritchie, CEO of ThinkFun and brother of Dennis Ritchie, the Bell Labs programming legend who wrote the C Programming Language and co-created the UNIX operating system.
“Math, science, and the arts - each of these give students a powerful new lens with which to view the world. Learning programming gives students yet another way to look at the world, one which is proving to be vitally important in the 21st century,” said Engelberg. “This ‘programming perspective’ gives students access to powerful critical thinking skills that allow them to identify the essential steps of solving a problem in order to tackle new variations with ease…Students who learn to program will have an edge in every academic subject they later encounter.”
