Focus Taiwan (CNA) reported that Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) expects Typhoon Champi’s heaviest rain from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening ET, putting mountainous areas of Yilan County at risk of its highest rain category. The forecast covers Friday, Oct. 23, through Saturday morning in Taiwan. CWA deputy director Wu Wan-hua gave the forecast at a Friday briefing, the outlet reported.
The CWA defines “extremely torrential rain” as more than 500 millimeters in 24 hours. Focus Taiwan’s report gave no projected rainfall total for Yilan and said extremely heavy rain was also possible in northern, northeastern and central Taiwan.
At 9 p.m. ET Thursday (01:00 UTC Friday; 9 a.m. Friday in Taiwan), CWA figures cited by Focus Taiwan put Champi’s maximum sustained winds at 155 kph, gusts up to 191 kph and wind radius at 320 kilometers.
Wu expected the storm to slow Friday morning ET (Friday evening in Taiwan) and turn north Friday afternoon ET (early Saturday in Taiwan), Focus Taiwan reported. The forecast adds detail to an earlier EconoTimes report on rain and wind risks across Taiwan.
