A Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) Cybertruck crash in Reno, Nevada, has intensified concerns over the safety of the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. The vehicle, operating in self-driving mode, failed to merge properly, hit a curb, and crashed into a pole. The driver, Jonathan Challinger, warned others on social media about becoming complacent with the technology, urging vigilance while using the feature.
According to a police report, the crash may have been caused by mechanical issues. Tesla has faced scrutiny for years over its autonomous driving system, which has been linked to multiple accidents, including fatalities. CEO Elon Musk recently claimed significant improvements in FSD’s safety with Version 13, but the viral Cybertruck crash suggests challenges remain.
Experts caution that Tesla’s reliance on cameras rather than redundant safety technologies makes it vulnerable in difficult conditions such as heavy rain, snow, or fog. Saber Fallah, professor of Safe AI and Autonomy at the University of Surrey, stated that AI-driven systems still struggle with lane endings, merges, and sudden road layout changes.
Tesla has not commented on the incident. Meanwhile, Musk has announced plans to launch a paid robotaxi service, starting in Austin, Texas, by June, with expansion into California and other regions later this year. A successful rollout is crucial for Tesla as it faces slowing EV demand and investor pressure to shift toward robotics and AI for future growth.
Troy Teslike, a researcher tracking Tesla’s technology, noted FSD still struggles with nighttime detection, data mapping, and vision-only navigation. "FSD doesn’t seem ready for driverless operation yet," he warned.
