‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 4, titled “What's the Matter with Kansas?," will follow Elizabeth and Philip’s continuing adventures in the world of espionage. They will struggle with dangerous tasks ahead while Philip’s past creates trouble for them. Meanwhile, Stan is set on risking his career in a bold new move.
The synopsis for “What's the Matter with Kansas?" posted on TV Guide reads, “Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) have qualms about a new assignment while a specter from Philip's past creates unforeseen dangers. Elsewhere: Stan (Noah Emmerich) makes a shocking play that could throw his career into turmoil.”
The promo for episode 4 opens to Paige (Holly Taylor) snooping around in a bedroom where she stumbles on a mysterious diary. In the next scene, she is seen talking to Elizabeth about finding the diary to which her mother warns, “No, no, no, no. It’s too dangerous.”
Elizabeth then continues, “What if they came back? What if they sense anything from you?” She looks genuinely concerned for Paige, who is attempting to get into their family’s line of “business."
In the previous episode, titled “The Midges,” Elizabeth and Philip attempted to indoctrinate Paige with their ideals as they opened up about their work on saving a country’s food crop from being destroyed by pests. According to the recap posted on Vox, Paige also received a new lesson on espionage while attempting to deal with the fact that she has to lie to her boyfriend.
The upcoming episode will also follow Philip and Elizabeth as they grow more doubtful about their new and potentially dangerous assignment. Philip will also need to deal his past brewing up some trouble for him. Meanwhile, Stan is set to risk his career in a bold new move.
‘The Americans’ season 5’s episode 4, titled “What's the Matter with Kansas?," is scheduled to air on March 28, 2017 on FX. It was directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton and written by Peter Ackerman. It will be followed by episode 5, titled "Lotus 1-2-3," directed by Noah Emmerich and scheduled to be released on April 4.
