Chicago, Illinois, May 11, 2017 -- The John Marshall Law School in Chicago recently presented two ethics programs, one targeted at real estate attorneys and the other toward intellectual property attorneys.

On May 2, John Marshall’s Center for Real Estate Law hosted “Ethics for Transactional Attorneys.” The program focused on the professional responsibility issues that arise in multijurisdictional transactions. Presenters included Janet Johnson and Barry Alberts from Schiff Hardin and Scott Kozlov from the Illinois Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission.
On May 5, John Marshall’s Center for Intellectual Property, Information & Privacy Law hosted its 8th Annual Program “Ethics in the Practice of Intellectual Property Law.” The program offered a review of ethics and professionalism with the following presentations: “What IP Lawyers Should Know About ARDC Proceedings and Client Complaints”; “Ethical Issues Faced by In-House IP Counsel”; “Conflicts of Interest in IP Practice”; “Ethical Issues for IP Lawyers Regarding Cybersecurity & Data Privacy and Protection”; “Ethical Issues in Patent Litigation”; and “Ethical Issues in the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.”
Speakers at the IP event included James Grogan of the Illinois Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission; Theodore L. Banks and Deirdre A. Fox of Scharf Banks Marmor; Daniel A. Cotter of Butler Rubin Saltarelli & Boyd; Darrick Hooker of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith; Melissa Anyetei of Mayer Brown; Linda McLeod of Kelly IP; and William Freivogel, Esq., a consultant to law firms on professional ethics and liability issues.
John Marshall students are also encouraged to participate in professional responsibility training. All students are required to take a course on professional responsibility, and for the last 8 years, John Marshall’s Office of Professionalism & Career Strategy has been offering the Justice Anne M. Burke Professionalism Series. This series is hosted by Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke and is held in collaboration with the Illinois Supreme Court’s Commission on Civility. Additionally, in 2015, John Marshall’s Career Services Office created professional soft-skills development workshops for law students.
