‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 16, titled “Memphis,” is set to feature a trip between Randall and William. The two are set to visit William’s hometown in Memphis, where Randall will get the chance to learn more about his biological father’s younger years.
The brief synopsis for episode 16 posted on TV Guide reads, “Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and William (Ron Cephas Jones) take a road trip to Memphis, where Randall learns about his biological father's past.” It seems that the upcoming episode will shift to Randall and his dying biological father as they continue to bond before his imminent demise.
The previous episode was wrought with family drama as the Pearsons struggled with their own personal and professional lives, in the past and in the present day. Randall, in particular, had trouble keeping himself together as he was slowly consumed by anger, guilt, resentment, and worry.
William’s sickness remained a trigger for his anxiety in addition to competition at work with colleague Sanjay (Hari Dhillon) and his struggles to remain a good husband and a diligent father. According to the recap on Vulture, Randall began experiencing uncontrollable tremors and blurry vision. He also broke down in his brother’s arms by the end of episode 15.
In addition to the pressures at home and at work, William decided to stop his chemotherapy and even locked his nurse out of the house. It seems that the father and son’s trip to Memphis may be a welcome break for a broken Randall.
It was revealed that Randall was prone to anxiety attacks as seen in a flashback, where he began hyperventilating over the stress of getting a school paper done. Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) also told William at some point that her husband had a knack for striving for perfection, which causes undue stress on his health.
‘This Is Us’ season 1’s episode 16, titled “Memphis,” is scheduled to air on NBC on February 21, 2017. It will be followed by episode 17, titled "What Now?," scheduled to be released on March 7.
