The cast and creators of NBC’s hit drama series “This Is Us” have been spilling the beans lately. It was revealed that the beginnings of Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) as a married couple will not be easy. Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that “This Is Us” season 3 will feature some major time jumps.
Viewers who watched the second season may recall that Toby’s parents were worried about Kate not being able to handle their son’s depressive episodes. It was also something that was not largely explored in the first two seasons. It was now confirmed that this side of their relationship will take a major part in “This Is Us” season 3.
Toby used to be Kate’s main support in dealing with her insecurities, pregnancy difficulties, and the guilt over the death of her father, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia), which has been her burden for many years. But “This Is Us” season 3 roles will be reversed, as hinted at in the season 2 finale.
In season 2’s “The Wedding,” Kate was seen entering their bedroom where Toby is seen wrapped up in his blanket with all the curtains closed. Kate then told him about going to the doctor to adjust his medications. This implies that in “This Is Us” season 3, Kate and Toby’s next big challenge is facing the latter’s depression together as a couple.
It's time to let go. #ThisIsUs

This plot was confirmed for “This Is Us” season 3 by showrunner Elizabeth Berger in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter during the Television Critics Association's summer press tour recently. "Within the first half of our season we're going to be seeing Kate and Toby go through various challenges," Berger said.
Meanwhile, another obvious approach to be witnessed in “This Is Us” season 3 is the inclusion of major time jumps to the future of the characters. For one, the season 2 finale showed a much older Randall (Sterling K. Brown) talking to a grown-up Tess (Iantha Richardson).
It was not clear who was the subject of their conversation but Randall was seen persuading his daughter “to go see her,” to which Tess said no. Without spoiling any major details of “This Is Us” season 3, showrunner Isaac Aptaker explained, “That future storyline is part of our bigger-picture plan for the series, but there will be answers in the future this season as well.”
In the previous seasons, the show gained popularity for successfully telling a story from the Pearsons’ past and how those were tied to the individual struggles they face in the present. It is interesting to see the show take it up a notch by featuring huge time jumps in “This Is Us” season 3 while also exploring Jack’s past as a soldier in the Vietnam War with his brother, Nicky (Michael Angarano). “This Is Us” is slated to debut on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
