Three people died of carbon monoxide poisoning in a Kyiv Oblast home with a basement generator running, and officials cited improper operation as the preliminary cause.

The Kyiv Oblast State Emergency Service said the dead were a man born in 1978, a woman born in 1986 and a girl born in 2010. A boy born in 2010 was hospitalized at a children’s hospital. The service said it received the report at 2:20 a.m. ET (07:20 UTC, 9:20 a.m. Kyiv time) Nov. 8.

The agency advised residents to place generators outdoors and keep them away from structures and access points.

Energy company DTEK said a Nov. 3 attack involving dozens of missiles and drones halted generation at three of its thermal power plants. On Nov. 7, DTEK said another attack damaged an energy facility in Brovary district, Kyiv Oblast, leaving part of the district without electricity.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast head Oleksandr Hanzha said Nov. 8 attacks on the power system left more than 600,000 consumers in the region without electricity. Hospitals and critical infrastructure were switching to generators as repairs continued, he said.

The service did not say whether the Chupyra home had lost electricity or whether an outage prompted the generator’s use.
