Three U.S. officials told CBS News on Monday that American forces had attacked Iranian sites near the Strait of Hormuz, amid U.S.-Iran deal talks on the eve of midterm voting.

CBS cited a senior U.S. official who said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired on an American aircraft, followed by U.S. strikes on Qeshm Island. CBS described the strikes as limited and defensive.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the strikes, CBS said. CBS also reported that President Donald Trump has floated restarting hostilities after the midterms.

In an Oct. 8 Truth Social post, Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before Nov. 3, a pledge he made ahead of the midterms. The reported strikes took place Nov. 2, one day before the date named in the post.

U.S. and Qatari mediators are brokering talks toward a U.S.-Iran deal, CBS reported. Midterm voting is scheduled for Nov. 3.
