Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sent condolences to Niger’s military leader, Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani, after Tiani’s father died at 110, in a message Nigeria’s State House published Nov. 7.

A communiqué from Tiani’s cabinet said Elhadji Tiani Hassane died in Niamey on Nov. 5, the Nigerien Press Agency reported. Tinubu wrote, “Nigeria stands in solidarity with Your Excellency and the Government and people of the Republic of Niger during this period of grief.” Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, signed the message.

The Nigerien Press Agency reported that funeral observances had been scheduled for Nov. 6 in Toukounouss, about 200 kilometers from Niamey.

Separately, a Nigerian State House communiqué says Tinubu chaired a summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) held after Niger’s July 26, 2023, coup. ECOWAS said Niger’s withdrawal from the bloc, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, took effect Jan. 29, 2025. Tinubu’s condolence message did not address regional policy or bilateral relations.
