Nigeria’s All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council says Nigeria’s power-sector work remains unfinished as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeks another term in 2027, with regulator data showing meters cover 61.51% of active electricity customers.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that 7,743,839 of 12,589,486 active customers had meters by the end of June 2026. Distribution companies installed 203,521 meters that month, up from 104,585 in May.
APC-PCC spokesperson Dele Alake said the council would present Tinubu’s power-sector record alongside the challenges still ahead, Premium Times and Vanguard reported Sunday. Alake described efforts to fix the electricity market and power sector as ongoing work.
A State House account of Tinubu’s remarks says he promised people would have electricity and would no longer pay estimated bills. It also says he told voters not to return him for another term unless he explained why he could not deliver. Separately, Channels Television reported that Tinubu met business and organised private sector leaders in Lagos on Nov. 1, 2022; its report did not connect that meeting to the pledge.
Premium Times also reported Alake’s claim that more than 1.5 million customers had been metered under the Presidential Metering Initiative in the past three years. A NERC order issued in June 2024 set a three-year goal to close the industry’s metering gap. The regulator’s latest figures cover distribution companies overall and do not break out results by initiative.
The State House account identifies grid constraints, unused generation capacity and legacy debts as obstacles, and says distribution companies deliver power to end users. It also says distribution companies were privatized in 2013 under President Goodluck Jonathan.
The 2027 general election is the next milestone tied to Tinubu’s bid for another term. Alake gave no timetable for finishing the remaining power-sector work.
