In August, Indian residents sent $2.739 billion overseas through the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme, with travel accounting for nearly three-fifths of these transfers.
Table 36 in the RBI’s October bulletin records the total at $2,738.58 million. It stood 6% above July’s $2,582.62 million and 3.6% higher than the $2,642.91 million recorded a year earlier. The RBI released the bulletin Oct. 23.
At $1,630.26 million, travel was the highest-value use recorded for August. The amount increased 11.4% from $1,463.11 million in July and represented about 59.5% of the August total.
Residents sent $321.53 million for equity and debt investment, 111.28% more than the $152.18 million recorded for that category in August 2025. The RBI listed $275.43 million under “Maintenance of close relatives” and $191.8 million under “Studies Abroad.”
The RBI table places payments for education services delivered remotely in “Studies Abroad.” Education expenses tied to an individual’s overseas travel are counted under “Travel.”
The scheme allows eligible resident individuals to remit up to $250,000 per financial year for permitted current- or capital-account transactions, or a combination of the two. The financial year runs from April through March. Corporations, partnership firms, Hindu undivided families and trusts are not eligible under the scheme.
The August 2026 data are preliminary, while the August 2025 data carry a partial-revision status.
