Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa’s Texas governor win prompted President Donald Trump to blame Gov. Greg Abbott after endorsing him, adding to Democrats’ election-night gains in the state.
The Associated Press (AP) called the race late Tuesday. Results updated Wednesday evening showed Hinojosa with 52.8% and Abbott with 45.7%.
The Independent reported that Trump endorsed Abbott on Election Day in a Truth Social post, calling him “an exceptional Governor and man.” After AP called the race, Trump wrote that Abbott had become a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only) over the previous six months and blamed that shift for the loss. He added that Abbott’s return to his earlier approach “wasn’t pretty.”
Abbott thanked supporters for his 12 years as governor and said he had congratulated Hinojosa and offered help with the transition. He also told supporters that the remaining ballots could not change the result mathematically, The Independent reported.
The Independent said Hinojosa’s victory would make her Texas’ first Latina governor and end a Democratic absence from the office lasting more than 30 years. Democrat James Talarico also defeated Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Senate race. EconoTimes previously covered AP’s calls in both Texas races.
