President Donald Trump tied his Cuba remarks to ships returning from Iran, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Cubans seeking political change to work with the CIA.

At a Friday rally in Fort Myers, Florida, Trump cast Rubio as the negotiator in a scenario involving a U.S. ship nearing Cuba to within about 50 yards. He said the United States would “take care of Cuba on our way back from Iran,” Anadolu Agency reported. The Associated Press said Trump was responding to a question shouted from the crowd.

Rubio’s post on X urged Cubans who want political change to pursue a “discrete partnership with the CIA,” Reuters reported. The news agency said the post offered no further details.

Trump and Rubio had also raised the possibility of U.S. military intervention in Cuba in May, The Associated Press reported. That earlier discussion provides context for Friday’s remarks, in which Trump again described a U.S. role in Cuba while tying it to the return trip from Iran.
