President Donald Trump told The New York Times he would accept the U.S. midterm election results and work with Democrats, amid pre-election doubts about how he would respond to a loss.

The Times said the interview took place at the White House shortly before 10:30 p.m. ET Nov. 3, as Trump watched returns. The newspaper quoted him saying, “I am absolutely willing to accept those results.” He added, “We’ll work with the Democrats.”

Before the vote, EconoTimes reported that 70% of poll respondents lacked confidence Trump would accept a midterm loss. Half said they were not at all confident, while 20% were not too confident; 28% said they were very or somewhat confident. The poll measured views before the election.

EconoTimes previously covered Trump’s offer to work with Democrats in its report on the election results and its coverage of the pre-election poll.
