The U.S. 10-year Treasury rate fell to 5.12% on Oct. 20, a day when oil futures turned lower and traders assessed reports of a new mediation proposal amid continuing U.S.-Iran contacts.
Treasury data put the 10-year rate three basis points below its Oct. 19 reading of 5.15%. The two-year rate moved in the opposite direction, rising two basis points to 4.79%. The daily figures are based on market quotations collected at or near 3:30 p.m. ET.
CME Group said West Texas Intermediate crude futures reached $101.37 a barrel before reversing lower. Its market commentary identified news about waivers of sanctions and tariffs on Russian oil exports as a source of selling pressure. CME said traders were also monitoring Middle East diplomacy.
Reuters tied the dollar’s weakness in part to declines in oil prices and longer-dated Treasury yields, as described in earlier coverage of currency and oil trading.
The New Arab, citing unnamed people familiar with the mediation, reported that Qatar and Pakistan had put a proposal to Washington and Tehran and received favorable reactions. The outlet said the plan addressed inspections of Iranian nuclear sites and interest on $6 billion in Iranian assets held in Qatar. The reported terms and responses have not been officially confirmed.
Bloomberg cited a diplomat involved in the negotiations who said discussions were continuing but discounted suggestions that an agreement was near. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Oct. 6 that it was mediating between the United States and Iran and that the two sides were exchanging messages. The ministry has said the $6 billion held in Qatar is linked to a humanitarian purchasing channel established in 2023.
Separately, the National Association of REALTORS® said pending home sales fell 7.3% in September from August and 11.3% from a year earlier. All four U.S. regions recorded monthly declines. The association’s chief economist, Lawrence Yun, attributed the weakness to rapidly rising mortgage rates.
The Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting is scheduled for Oct. 27-28. The association plans to release October pending-home-sales figures on Nov. 18.
