A number of defendants, including public employees and recruits, are due before the United Arab Emirates’ Military Criminal Court over alleged service exemptions and altered records, Gulf News reported Friday.

Some defendants allegedly used their positions to seek service exemptions or exceptions they could not claim, Gulf News reported. The report also describes alterations to evidence of completed national and reserve service. It says false data, official paperwork and medical reports were allegedly used to help some recruits avoid required procedures.

The Military Attorney General referred a group of defendants for trial before the Military Criminal Court, Gulf News reported. Prosecutors filed charges tied to what each defendant was accused of doing.

Gulf News reported that the Military Attorney General said following service rules supports equal treatment and protects national obligations. The official said authorities would prosecute people found to have evaded service through deception or helped others do so.
