Britain has pledged £17 million for repairs to Chernobyl’s protective shelter and ventilation systems, The Independent reported, amid concern that corrosion could leave lasting risks for people and the environment.

The newspaper said a Russian drone damaged the structures last year. It cited concern about corrosion but did not identify who raised it.

Ukraine’s government and Group of Seven donors are involved in a wider repair program led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, according to the report.

The Independent also reported that Prime Minister Andy Burnham hosted President Volodymyr Zelensky at Downing Street on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The paper quoted Chancellor John Healey describing Britain’s commitment to Ukrainians as “unshakeable.”

Burnham also confirmed faster air-defense missile deliveries to Ukraine during the visit, the outlet said. The Independent reported that Britain would accelerate supplies of lightweight multi-role missiles, weapons that have been shown to counter Russian jet-powered drones. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said Britain would continue supporting Ukraine, according to the paper.
