The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said Thursday it received a report after a passing ship saw a vessel on fire in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil-shipping route near Oman.
UKMTO placed the reported vessel nine nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman. The agency said the crew’s status was unknown.
The strait links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. U.S. Energy Information Administration quarterly estimates show that about 21.2 million barrels of crude oil, condensate and petroleum products moved through it each day in 2025, roughly one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption. The agency identifies Asian import markets as particularly exposed to disruptions there.
