Nuclear weapons are by far the most destructive weapons that humanity has ever devised, which is why a lot of people are troubled by the fact that both the US and Russia still have thousands of them. The UN is about to make a decision with regards to the possibility of complete nuclear disarmament. In response, practically every major nuclear power in the world are protesting, with the US in the lead.
In a bid to finally rid the world of these dangerous elements, over 2,500 scientists from over 70 countries signed an open letter urging nuclear disarmament. In the letter, the scientists point out that the UN had banned the use of several other weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological arsenals. Nuclear bombs are the only things left for the international body to prohibit.
“Nuclear arms are the only weapons of mass destruction not yet prohibited by an international convention, even though they are the most destructive and indiscriminate weapons ever created,” the letter reads. “We scientists bear a special responsibility for nuclear weapons since it was scientists who invented them and discovered that their effects are even more horrific than first thought.”
Unfortunately, it would seem that the US, along with the UK and France are not thrilled with the idea of losing their nuclear arsenal, and are now protesting the meeting. As expected, both Russia and China are also sitting this meeting out, The Washington Post reports.
Those who support the ban on nukes include Pope Francis himself, as well as the U.N. Secretary General António Guterres and numerous non-profit organizations. Even the UN ambassador of the US, Nikki Haley agreed that getting rid of nuclear weapons would be great before expressing doubt that it can actually be done.
According to the argument that the US and the rest of the nuclear disarmament opposition employ, a blanket ban on nukes is just not right at the moment. For those wondering, no, this is not just due to the Trump administration as even former president Barrack Obama also opposed a ban on nuclear weapons during his terms.
