U.S. jobless claims remain stable, consistent with robust labor markets

U.S. jobless claims continue to be stable. For the week ended 27 January, the initial jobless claims remained widely steady at 230k, below consensus expectations of 235k. Meanwhile, claims for the prior week were downwardly revised by 2k to 231k.

The print today takes the four-week moving average down to 235k. Meanwhile, continuing claims for the week ended 20 January rose to 1.953 million from an upwardly revised 1.940 million. The insured jobless rate remained at 1.4 percent. The claims data is seen as consistent with robust labor markets, stated Barclays in a research report.

Region wise, most states saw either modest rises or decreases in claims, which widely counter each other, leaving the national total widely unchanged from the prior week.
