Xapo, a Switzerland-based bitcoin wallet service provider, has entered into a partnership with Uber Argentina, allowing it to accept Xapo bitcoin debit cards.
In a tweet by Uber Argentina on July 3 stated, “Pay your trips with Bitcoin! Loading your card @Xapo obtains a $ 30 discount on your next trip without code.”
Earlier in April, an Argentinean court ordered authorities in Buenos Aires to crackdown on Uber following a protest by taxi driver unions against the ridesharing giant. Although there has not been any official release by Xapo in this context, the company had sent an email a few days ago to some customers that outlined the new partnership, razorsforex reported.
"Now Uber also supports Bitcoin, and with your Xapo card you can ride inside or outside Argentina. Our special alliance with Uber Argentina gives you important discounts. Add your Xapo card in Uber and use these codes to get discounts" the mail read as translated by razorsforex.
According to Xapo’s representatives, the alliance is a great way to boost adoption of the startup’s product, Coindesk.com reported.
"This is a win for all local Uber users and drivers, and for Uber as a company, as they are able to continue operations in Argentina through Xapo's Debit Card. It's also great news for bitcoin: it's one step closer to seeing mainstream companies adopt bitcoin." Anni Rautio, product manager at Xapo told Coindesk.
Following the announcement last week, Rautio said that there has been an increase in interest for its debit card product among Argentineans. Previously, Uber Argentina introduced alternative payment methods like Neteller, Papipago among others.
