Ukraine’s General Staff put Russian military personnel losses at about 1.6 million through Nov. 5, a tally that gives no breakdown of deaths, wounded or missing troops.
The General Staff’s latest update lists about 1,599,390 losses from Feb. 24, 2022, through Nov. 5, 2026, including 2,380 for the previous day. The Armed Forces of Ukraine’s loss page labels the cumulative figure an estimate and does not define the personnel-loss category.
In a Jan. 27, 2026, analysis, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated nearly 1.2 million Russian troops killed, wounded or missing from February 2022 through December 2025. It put deaths alone for that period at 275,000 to 325,000.
Because the CSIS estimate covers an earlier period and uses categories Ukraine’s tally does not define, the figures are not directly comparable.
CSIS cautioned that casualty and fatality estimates are difficult to establish during wartime and may be affected by the parties’ incentives to present losses selectively.
