Vietnam and the United States have made positive progress in negotiations toward a new trade agreement, with a deal potentially ready to be signed soon, Vietnamese leader To Lam said, according to a government statement released Tuesday.

Lam made the comments following talks with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York, where the Vietnamese leader is attending the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting signals continued efforts by Hanoi and Washington to strengthen economic and trade relations as both sides work toward finalizing an agreement. According to the Vietnamese government, negotiations have produced encouraging results, raising expectations that the two countries could reach a formal trade deal in the near future.

Vietnam and the United States have developed increasingly important commercial ties, making progress on a trade agreement closely watched by businesses and investors with exposure to the two economies. A finalized pact could provide greater clarity for companies involved in bilateral trade and reinforce broader economic cooperation between Washington and Hanoi.

Lam did not provide a specific timeline for signing the agreement or disclose details about the provisions under discussion. The Vietnamese government also did not specify which outstanding issues still need to be resolved before the deal can be completed.

The talks with Greer took place as Lam traveled to New York for the UN General Assembly, providing an opportunity for high-level discussions with U.S. officials alongside the annual diplomatic gathering.

The latest comments suggest negotiations remain on a constructive path. A potential Vietnam-US trade agreement would represent another step in the two countries’ expanding economic relationship, with businesses likely to watch closely for details on tariffs, market access and other trade conditions once an agreement is finalized.

For now, both sides appear to be moving closer to a deal, although an exact signing date has yet to be announced.
