Volvo's cars to be sold in South Korea in 2021 will use SK Telecom's (SKT's) integrated in-vehicle infotainment service.
SKT's IVI service will be among the basic specifications for all 2022 Volvo models in South Korea to be released in the second half of 2021.
Updates of the latest features will be done through a wireless network.
The joint technology development agreement between SKT and Volvo Car Korea marks the first time that SKT's integrated in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) service will be used in mass-produced vehicles marketed in South Korea.
By combining its IVI service with various other services such as an artificial intelligence platform and a car navigation platform, SKT aims to provide drivers with real-time guidance and various connectivity functions.
The IVI service addresses many customers' needs, such as real-time location information and fine dust checks.
SKT has tried to hook an infotainment system onto 5G networks and would consult with Volvo on how to provide ultra-high-quality media services in real-time and in-car payment.
In January, SKT signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese electric vehicle maker Byton for the development of automotive solutions such as an in-vehicle infotainment system for the latter's cars that would be released in South Korea.
