Former Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in Sunday's parliamentary election after citing a sample-based estimate that put the student-backed list ahead of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Reuters reported.
Vucic said the Student List would take 135 to 140 seats, compared with 105 for the SNS-backed list. He said no other list had entered parliament and that final results were not yet available.
Vucic called the snap election in September. Student protests over perceived corruption and creeping authoritarianism followed a 2024 train station canopy collapse in Novi Sad that killed 16 people, Reuters reported.
Reuters said the student movement had built broad support and become a substantial test of Vucic's political standing. It noted that he became prime minister in 2014 and president in 2017.
